What started as a gallant effort with depleted troops ended in a slight debacle with the Express notching four third period tallies.
Hawks were without a bunch of regulars on Sunday night and their absences finally caught up with us in the third when we could not maintain the tie and let a solid effort slip away.
Opperman #18 moved back on D and played a stellar game, moving the puck out of our zone with quiet calm and leading the team up the ice all night. Roffey #20 picked up his first of the year on a play which saw some hard work in the offensive corner from Mulligan #11 who made some nifty moves and got the puck to Robinson #7. Robinson moved the puck to Nanton #10 at the point and he found Roffey wide open with a pass which he buried into the gaping cage. Roffey has been making quick-handed point shots all year, finding the narrow seams to get the puck to the net and was rewarded, finally, for his efforts.
The lead was not to hold, however, and we gave up a very late second period goal to be knotted at 1-1, after two.
We started strongly in the third and had numerous shots thwarted by Express’s keeper and our depleted troops ran out of gas and couldn’t contain the Express’ energized troops and the four-goal floodgates opened.
We’ve got four days of ‘healing’ until Friday’s tilt with River East…let’s regroup and keep up the effort for a full sixty and get back into the win column.
