Your Charleswood Hawks didn’t need to make it dramatic, but they did on Friday night with a 5-4 overtime win over the visiting St.Boniface Riels. Opening the scoring in this one was Spencer Ferbers who banged home a rebound off a Trevor Szyda point shot on the power play at 6:54 of the first period. However, the Riels Austin Kossack led the charge back for the visitors with a pair of goals to close out the period and then the Riels Samuel Jean Paul struck again early in the second to put the visitors ahead by a margin of 3-1.  Midway through the second the Hawks woke up from their slumber when Noah Robidoux tapped home a rebound off the end boards from a Riley Gilmore point shot to cut the Riels lead to a single goal. Thanks to a gift turnover behind the Riels net by Eric Durupt, Shane Kustra-Nelson grabbed the puck and walked out in front of the net and took full advantage sliding one past Tyler Gagliardi to tie the game at 3. Late in the second the Riels Brett Lefko took a boarding minor for an unnecessary and dangerous hit on the Hawks Trevor Szyda and early in the third the Hawks made them pay. On the ensuing powerplay Dylan Zeke and Shea Gorenstein traded passes at the point before Gorenstein sent a shot towards the net that bounced over to a ready and waiting Max Gardiner who gave the home team the lead. The Hawks managed to hold the Riels at bay for most of the third, but with a late press with their goalie pulled they managed to tie the game to send this one into overtime with just 22 seconds remaining. The extra frame didn’t last long with Reg Bowles springing Shane Kustra-Nelson on a breakaway just 30 seconds into it that he made no mistake on (check it out below) to give the Hawks the much needed win.
