Kustra-Nelson takes the face-off in a wild second period on Monday night (P.Weissgaerber/Charleswood Hawks)

Thanks to a flurry of goals in the second period the Charleswood Hawks managed to fend off the St.Boniface Riels by a score of 5-2 on Monday night. Nolan Sekundiak opened up the scoring on the powerplay with his third of the season from Austin Hesselbart and Spencer Ferbers (who extended his scoring streak to 6 games). The second brought some back and forth action until the Riels’ Austin Kossack got them on the board with a lucky one beating Ben Thorlakson in a crowded crease. However, the Hawks responded with all guns blazing with 3 goals in only 2 minutes and 13 seconds to chase Riels netminder Reid Pennington from the game.  First it was J.P. Lovell, then Shane Kustra-Nelson on the powerplay, which was capped by a Trevor Szyda backhand from the high slot. The third saw the Riels make it interesting with another lucky one off a rebound off the end board by Brayden North.  Shane Kustra-Nelson put the game on ice with an empty netter to raise the Hawks record to 17-4-3 on the season good for second place in the MMJHL. The Coy will be rocking next Friday with the final home game before the Christmas Break when the 5th place St.James Canucks come to visit – so clear the schedule and we’ll see you at 7:30pm!
