Hawks Win in OT!

After coming off a heart breaking shootout loss on Friday night, we looked to rebound from that and get back into the win column as we took on the St. Boniface Riels Sunday evening. The Riels were coming off a tough loss of their own on Friday so this one promised to be a good game.

Early into the 1st period, St. B would get on the score sheet with a power play goal. Not to be outdone, Austin Hesselbart would also score on a power play to tie it up at the 10:30 mark of the first! The assists went to Spencer Ferbers and Joben Smith. The first period would end with each team with a goal.

The second period would see the Riels get another goal to put themselves up by 1, but unfortunately we would not be able to do the same so after 40 minutes of play, the score would be 2-1.

That would change early in the 3rd though. Dylan Tanner would get his first goal as a Hawk to tie things up again at 2:47 of the period! Congratulations Dylan. We’re glad to have you on our side. The assist went to Mitch Justl and Max Gardiner.

Things remained tied for the remainder of the period so we would need extra time to figure this one out. With just seconds left on the clock, Matt Lawrence – with the assist from Quinn Werbowski – would find the back of the net to get the game winning goal and give us a dramatic OT win!

Ryan Hall was in net for us, stopping 33 of 35 shots for an impressive save percentage of .943 for the game.

We’re going to enjoy this victory for a few days, but we’ll be right back at it again this coming Thursday January 24th as we head to St Vital to take on the Victorias. St Vital has won the last 2 outings between us, but we look to change that this week. Puck drops at 7:30 pm at the Centennial Area. We hope to see you there to cheer us on!

Wednesday Night in Stonewall

Wednesday evening was another road trip for your Charleswood Hawks as they visited the Stonewall Jets to face them for the 3rd time this season. The series was tied at one a piece and the last game went to your Hawks.

It was a tough game for us right from the get go, with the shots being 21-5 in the first period, but only one shot from Stonewall would go in. After 20 minutes it was 1-0 for the Jets so we headed back to the dressing room to re-group for the next 20.

The 2nd period saw the shots at 15-13 for the Jets, however they would also get on the score sheet with another 2 goals, making it a 3-0 game after 40 minutes of play.

At 11:39 of the 3rd frame, Austin Hesselbart would get us on the board with the assists from Dylan Tanner and Spencer Ferbers. That would be Tanner’s first point with us! Keep ’em coming!

Unfortunately that just would not be enough as Stonewall would add another 2 goals in the frame for a final score of 5-1. Final shots on goal were 49-26 for Stonewall.

We now shake this one off and prepare for our next match up with Stonewall as we take them on again this Friday evening during the MMJHL Showcase at the Bell MTS IcePlex. Puck drops at 7:15 pm on the ReMax Rink. Be sure to come and cheer on not only your Charleswood Hawks but also our league that allows us to enjoy some terrific local hockey.

Another OT Thriller

Sunday night your Charleswood Hawks took on the Raiders on their home ice, hoping to chalk up another win for us. The last 2 meetings between these 2 clubs ended in overtime, the last of which was in our favor.

Late in the 1st period, Ben Wicha would get your Hawks on the board at 18:06 into the frame. The assists went to Sam Maxwell and Matt Lawrence. That would be Maxwell’s first point as a Hawk!!

The second period saw a 6-5 shot count for the Raiders, but neither side would find the net. However at the 4:50 mark of the 3rd period, the Raiders would get on the score sheet to tie things up. After 60 minutes, the score remained tied at 1 so we would need some extra time to get a winner of this one.

So it was off to OT we went for the 3rd game in a row. Mitch Justl would make sure the extra point came our way as he scored at the 2:48 mark of the extra time, with the assist going to Austin Hesselbart.

The series between the 2 clubs is now tied at 2 a piece and last nights win was 3rd win of the calendar year so far! We now set our sights to Stonewall as we head out there for our next game this coming Wednesday January 16th. Puck drops at 7:30. We hope to see you there to cheer on your Charleswood Hawks.
