On Friday night in the comfy confines of the Coy your Charleswood Hawks took down the Fort Garry/Fort Rouge Twins by a score of 2-1 in double overtime. The Twins came out swinging in this one out shooting the Hawks by a margin of 14-8 in the first period thanks in large part to 2 Twins powerplays.  As usual Ryan Hall provided some stellar play between the pipes for the Hawks blanking the Twins until just past the 8 minute mark of the second when Eric Lecuyer struck for the Twins on a feed from Jared Bucci to give the Twins the one goal lead. The third became a bit of a parade of Twins players heading to the penalty box giving the Hawks a couple of chances to convert with the man advantage, but they were unable despite outshooting the Twins 18-8 during the period. Then, in dramatic fashion Meyer Nell fed Trevor Szyda with a little over 2 minutes left for the equalizer that would send this one to overtime. The Hawks continued to push the play on the Twins in the second extra frame and a la Justin Williams “Mr.Clutch” Noah Robidoux ended the game and the series late in the second overtime period with the help of Spencer Ferbers and Meyer Nell.

The win sends the Hawks to Round 2 where they will face the #3 seed Transcona Railer Express who they hold the edge on in the season series by a margin of 3-2…the Railer Express dispatched the St.Vital Vics on Thursday night winning the series by a margin of 4 games to 1 with Connor Shaw posting back to back shutouts in games 4 & 5…this series should be a dandy folks as these 2 foes were separated by just 2 points in the final league standings…a special thanks goes out to Kellen Isaac and Max George of the APHA Winterhawks who led the red and black out onto the ice on Friday night as their honourary flag bearers…the schedule for round 2 should be out in the next couple of days, so keep coming back to the for everything Charleswood Hawks!

Heading into Game # 4, there was no doubt on either teams part that they were at a critical juncture of the series. A Twins victory and the series would be knotted up at 2 and a Hawk win and the boys head home to the cozy confines of the Coy with a 3 games to 1 lead.

The Twins stormed out of the gate in this one and hemmed the Hawks in their own end for most of the first period. As we have all witnessed a countless number of times, one team has most of the control of a period and it is their opponent who strikes first and that was the case tonight. JP Lovell fired a howitzer that eluded Fiorentino in the Twins net. It was assisted by Quinn Werbowski and Reg Bowles on a Hawk’s powerplay. The only two goals of the second period were scored by the Hawks. Meyer Nell from JP Lovell would score the eventual winner and later in the frame Quinn Werbowski off a great feed from Taylor Opperman would give the Hawks a three goal cushion heading into the third. Dylan Zeke would be the benefactor of some hard work by Noah Robidoux short handed to put the Hawks up by 4. The Twins would get on the board late in the period with a PP marker from Cole Zadro and that would be all the scoring in this one. Make the final, Hawks 4 Twins 1.

Ryan Hall made 29 saves to earn the win stopping 13 alone in period # 1. Twin starter Mario Fiorentino was credited with 11 saves and the loss and his replacement Luke Zacharias made 18. Hawks were 1 for 4 on the PP and killed off 4 of 5 Twin odd man advantages.

Game # 5 is scheduled for the Eric Coy Arena on Friday, March 16th with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. No question the Twins will be out to extend the series and your Hawks will want to end it, should be a dandy! See you Friday at the Coy!
